Victor and Elizabeth Chrapko Birds and Bees Wine.

Once upon a time back in 1964, Victor and Elizabeth Chrapko got married and received their first fruit trees – crab apple and pear. From there they started the orchard that would lead to very big things.Fast forward to 1999. With a thriving orchard featuring 15 different fruits and a small honeybee operation in full swing , they set their sights on even bigger things – a winery.

Alberta’s strict bylaws for fermenting wine made their quest a tough one to conquer. But the Chrapko family firmly believed that if you can’t beat ‘em, change ‘em. So for the next 6 years, Victor and Elizabeth fought the law. And they won.

In 2005, they became Alberta’s very first Certified Organic Winery…

Great Grandad Ward emigrated from England to Canada in the early 1900’s and moved onto our family orchard in 1918. In 1922 Wards Packinghouse was built and became the main packing facility for neighbouring Southeast Kelowna orchardists.

In the 1970’s, grandsons Ted and Chris Turton took over ownership and management of the property and continued growing premium pears, cherries and dessert apples as well as vitis vinifera grapes.

Later, under Chris’s lead, an apple belt-press was installed into the old packinghouse and the framework for Wards Cider was laid. In 2006 his daughter Jennifer Turton-Molgat joined the company and became involved in developing the family estate into a winery and cidery.
