Robert Bell's Wines of Canada

Okanagan Trip 2020

Day 5

Kraze Legz Vineyard and Winery
Kraze Legz Vineyard and Winery

To me one of the most beautiful wineries in Canada, a winery I would like to own is Kraze Legz Vineyard and Winery home of Skaha Vineyards. The winery sits on the top of a hill overlooking the village of Kaleden.

Sometimes when one plans a trip they forget a detail or two. As it so happened we never arranged a time to visit the winery. The gate was closed when we arrived owners Gerry and Susan Thygesen where not home. Sue was delivering wines in Kelowna and Gerry was working the vineyards.

We contacted Susan who was on her way back and she gave us the code to open the gate and contacted Gerry. We had a few minutes to take photos before Gerry arrived.

Once Gerry arrived we were treated to some of the very best hospitality one can imagine. Susan arrived in time to help bring the wines out from the tasting room. Ah the good life!

We enjoyed the wineries and commentary provided not only about the wines but the work they put into establishing such a magnificent winery. The unique location contains shale and sandstone sediments, plant fossils and coal layers deposited by a large paleo-river system that was active 50 Million years ago.

The vines are hand harvested & minimally approached, leaving you with a refined taste of this unique terroir in your glass. All four of us agreed that every single wine we tasted was amazing.

Next stop would be Kaleden newest winery Black Market Wine co. Rob Hammersley and Michelle Shewchuk started as a virtual winery before finding their new home and vineyard in Kaleden overlooking the lake.

The winery was closed but they invited us to come on by. We were happy we did.

Like many family owned wineries Someone has to work a second job, at Blackmarket Rob looks after the vineyard and winemaking, Michelle works for a major airlines.

With their current location been new they have plans to build a tasting room on the property.

Try their Secret Society a blend where they will not tell you what grapes are in the wine you have tofigure out the blend. It however, is a nice sipping wine for a summer afternoon.
