River Stone Estate Winery

143 Buchanan Dr,
Oliver

A small, family owned and operated by Ted and Lorraine Kane.  Located on a small knoll in the middle of the valley, just south of the well recognized McIntyre Bluff and just north of Oliver. The winery tasting room and the families' home is surrounded by vineyards.

The winery name, River Stone, and vineyard name, River Rock Vineyards indicates the vines come from the deep rock and gravel soils laid down following the last glacial recession. They grow five red Bordeaux varietals; Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot as well as two white varietals; Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. Long sunlit summer days followed by fall’s warm days and cool nights have consistently produced premium quality fruit.

Ted is the owner, winemaker and grower for River Stone. Ted started making wine in his parent's garage in Edmonton when he was 18. A self confessed Chemistry geek his passion for all things wine is reflective in the final product.

Lorraine is the owner who provides all the big picture ideas and is Ted's most supportive  fan.  She is also the passion behind the beautiful gardens you get to enjoy when you visit River Stone. Lorraine is also a doctor with a family practice in Osoyoos.

She is also the mother of three children.

The winery believes part of it success is due to its amazing staff. Most winery website never mention their team The Kane's have a full page listing all of their employees.

Julie Planiden is the assistant general manger and has been with the winery since 2015

Warwich Shaw is the vineyard manager.

Sandy Taylor has been withe winery since day1

Perhaps the most interesting member of the team is Olivers Fire chief Bob Graham. Bob has been Oliver’s Fire Chief since 2017, and prior to that, the Deputy Fire Chief since 2011, and an active member for 25 years. This year he received the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association’s Municipal Long Service Award medal commemorating 30 years of service in the volunteer fire fighting community. If your lucky you may see Bob in the tasting room.

When it comes to their wines. They have an excellent cellar. The most talked about wine is their Stone Throw.

This rich, inky red wine is made up of Merlot 78%, Cabernet Sauvignon 11%, Malbec 8%, Petit Verdot 3% and 100% BC Grown. This is a complex red with velvety tannin and a smooth, long finish. Certainly a wine to ponder and put the world to right with. 94
