Rob Hammersley and Michelle Shewchuk are a couple with a deep passion for wines. BC wines that is. They live in Calgary but produce wine in the Okanagan using a crush pad service. They work with Mark Simpson's BC Wine Studio.

The name reflects the law that prevents them form taking more than to bottles of wine across the provincial boarder into Alberta.

Both were born in Winnipeg . They met while at university. Their interest in wine took off after they joined a wine tasting group run by a fellow student who subsequently became a winemaker in the Napa Valley. After university, they lived three years in Japan, working as English teachers and fostering a love of travel that has never left them. Fortunately, Michelle’s career makes it easier to travel.

Although they use BC Wine studios, Rob and Michelle are as hands on as possible helping with every stage of operation from growing the grapes to bottling.

At Black Market Wine Co. we’re all about breaking the rules set up by the traditional winemaking establishment. Small and nimble, we seek opportunities that others often don’t. We know the land, the climate, and the people. We explore the valley’s vineyards and kick tractor tires while talking shop with local farmers. We’re arbitrageurs, seeking ripe acquisitions across the Okanagan Valley and crafting these into inspired wines for the savvy. We blend the greatest wine-growing and wine-making talent together for unique collaborations.

One of their best wines is the Secret Society White. Their are three varietals  blended from vineyards in Oliver, Naramata and Osoyoos.

Its a summer patio wine for sure!

Their Syrah is also a winner with aromas of blueberry, blackberry. Goes well with cheese plates

Message Vineyard (www.messagevineyard.com; @messagevineyard) name them one of the Top 10 list of best winery website designs.

There is a possibility that they will soon purchase land establishing their own facilities and a tasting room.
