Vignoble Isle de Bacchus

Vignoble Isle de Bacchus

Vignoble Isle de Bacchus is located on Île d'Orléans, near Quebec City. It is one of the pioneers of Quebec winemaking, producing a variety of wines including red, white, rosé, ice wine, and late-harvest wine. The winery is owned by Steve Boyer and Carol Primeau. The vineyard spans 11 hectares and utilizes stainless steel vats for fermentation and American oak casks for aging. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings in a charming setting that offers stunning views of the St. Lawrence River. The vineyard has a rich history, having planted the first vineyard on the island, and provides a warm welcome to guests.

The vineyard was established in 1982 and is a pioneer in the history of Quebec viticulture . The vineyard is named after the old name given to Île d’Orléans by Jacques Cartier himself in 1535 when he baptized it “Isle de Bacchus” due to the abundance of wild vines he found there at the time . The vineyard currently operates 11 hectares of vineyards on the island, whose grape varieties are adapted to the climate of Quebec. Steve and Carol obtained the winery in 2017. The couple of entrepreneurs and wine lovers, who then lived in Montérégie, decided to come and spend their holidays on Île d’Orléans with their two boys.“We came to harvest on the Isle of Bacchus and we fell in love with this little corner of paradise!” remembers Carole as she takes in her small estate, rich in history.

The vineyard has an advantageous topology, terraced about 30 meters from the level of the St. Lawrence River with a south, southwest orientation, which gives it a beneficial microclimate. Indeed, no significant frost was recorded for the period from mid-May to mid-October, which ensures a good maturity of our grapes and results in a quality harvest.

The vines of the Isle de Bacchus estate extend over three distinct plots in the village of Saint-Pierre, totaling nearly 35,000 vines.

The main grape varieties are:

  • Vandal-cliché
  • Holy cross
  • Geisenheim
  • Marshal Foch
  • Eona
  • Vidal
  • White Acadia
  • White Frontenac
  • Marquette

The winery has a bistro with a limited menu. It is rated as the best winery to watch the sunset.
