Steve Byfield
Steve Byfiels is a Native of Kitchener, Ontario. His parents came to Canada from Jamaica in the 60's. Steve was introduced to the culture of wine during his university studies as an amateur winemaker. Fascinated by its cultural influence upon Society’s perception of cuisine and drink, Steve’s curious, artistic, mind was Fuelled to explore further.
He is a pianist who studied music at York University in the 1990s, had his own jazz band, and envisaged becoming a music educator before starting to make his own wine as an amateur. Serenaded by the results, he was drawn to professional winemaking and began working at Ontario’s Southbrook Vineyards in 2001. Four years later he became assistant winemaker.
He worked as assistant winemaker with Ridgepoint Wines, Calamus Estate Winery while also holding the position of winemaker / general manager at Thomas and Vaughan Estate Winery.
After working at other wineries, Byfield started his own brand, Nyarai Cellars—nyarai means “humility” in the Shona language of Zimbabwe. Nyarai is a virtual winery.
Nyarai Cellars is a small winery, with production measured in the hundreds of cases each year. Over the years, Byfield’s portfolio has included varietal wines such as viognier and sauvignon blanc, as well as blends and a sparkling wine
The winery, led by Steve Byfield, has also garnered accolades for its innovative approach and commitment to quality. Steve believes in a minimal intervention from “bud to burst”. “Ninety percent of the winemaking journey takes place in the vineyard. From grape, to bottle, to your table, I want you to enjoy what the terroir -land, water, sunshine, region – has to offer. I strive to create a sense of place”,
