Glass House Estate Winery

In 1983, Arthur and Ingrid de Jong and their three girls immigrated from the Netherlands to start a new adventure in Langley.  Within a month of landing, they purchased five acres to build their first home and greenhouse development. For the next 20 years, they worked as a team to develop many greenhouse projects both in Canada and internationally. After a hard days work, they would unwind with a delicious meal and glass of wine shared with friends and family. In 2004, they sold their last project and purchased an overgrown Christmas tree farm which would one day become Glass House Estate Winery.

Over the past weekend the winery hosted the West Fine Art Show. Barbara and I are acquainted with John Ferrie (a well known artist from Vancouver) we decided to take the drive from White Rock in support of the art show and John. We were quite surprsed to see how busy the winery was for a March afternoon; not only was the art show well attended, every available spot was occupied in the tasting room.

After enjoying a wander through the art show and a chat with John, Barbara and I headed into the winery for a tasting session. The winery was very busy, however, they managed to squeeze us in at the bar. Erick Poulton the new general manager hosted our tasting experience. While enjoying the wines Eric preented we had the chance to learn of the new features at the winery.

The SPHERA, a new 360-degree dining experience presented by Fifth Avenue Real Estate Marketing and The Joseph Richard Group (who manage the winery for the owners). Perfect for the times, SPHERA brings outdoor dining in the comfort of a spacious heated clear dome with lots of seating and room for plenty of delicious chef-driven cusine.

There is an excellent food menu;. featuring a meat and cheese board, stone baked magherita flatbread, tenderloin of beef, sablefish and so many more deligtful dishes.

Our tasting experience began with the Stellatus Cuvee sparking wine. A slightly dry wine with a touch of sweetness. The sizzel was not over- whelming; making for a smooth fresh wine.

The 2020 Madeline Sylvander came next . On the nose, a nice array of fresh citus fruits which continued on the pallet. The wine had a gentle touch of sweetness. A very nice wine indeed.

This was followed by the 2020 Pinot Gris, it was enjoyable, yet quite different than most Pinot Gris. The spices dominated with hints of ginger that tickled the pallet proving a nice sensation. It also provided some nice citrus fruits; we give this one high praise.

It was time to taste the reds. Erick started off with the 2017 Pinot Noir which provided an excellent aroma of blackcurrant, and strawberries. On the pallet black cherries, plums, raspberries, and blackberries.. An excellent wine!

Perhaps the wine that impressed was the most was the 2018 Meridian a blend of Tempranillio, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The flavours shone through with hints of black cherry and sweet tabacco. This was Barbara's favourite; she pictured sipping it while binging on Netflix

Last, but not least, we ended the tasting experience with the port style NV Festa, it was a winner.. One the best port style wines we have enjoyed over the years. A bottle came home with us to be enjoyed with friends at a later date.

We returned for lunch!
