British Columbia's Fraser Valley

Country Wineries

Fraser Valley is the section of the Fraser River basin in southwestern British Columbia, downstream from the Fraser Canyon. After descending through the rapids of the Fraser Canyon, the Fraser River emerges almost at sea level at Yale, over 100 kms inland. The river passes through some of the most fertile agricultural land in British Columbia, as well as the heart of the Greater Vancouver region, on its way to the mouth of the Georgia Strait.

During the last ice age, the area that would become the Fraser Valley was covered by a sheet of ice, walled in by surrounding mountains. As the ice receded, land that had been covered by glaciers became covered by water instead, then slowly rose above the water, forming the basin that exists today. The valley is the largest land form of the Lower Mainland Eco region.

This website is for reference only and refers to wineries located in the south-west portion of the British Columbia, starting with Hope and the area through which the mighty Fraser River winds its way down to the sea. The wineries now extend from Vancouver to Chilliwack which is near the foothills of the Coastal Mountain Range .

In 2019 we decided it was necessary to separate those wineries located in the countryside from those located in an Urnab setting. Due to the nature of such cities as Delta, Richmond and Maple Ridge it was not that easy to place the wineries.

Blue Heron Fruit Winery

18539 Dewdney Trunk Rd
Pitt Meadows, BC V3Y 2R9

The winery is located on the north side of the Fraser River opposite The Fort Winery Company. George and Ragna Flynn started farming the property in 1946, and opened the winery in 2003 at the age of 84. The name comes from the large number of Blue Herons found in the area. His 20 acres was originally composed of cranberries and blueberries. George hired Dominic Rivard of The Fort Winery to produce the initial wines for Blue Heron which included blueberry, strawberry and cranberry fruits, as well as dessert wines, including peach and apricot; also a very sweet, very smooth iced apple dessert wine.

Winemaker : Richard Flynn

Philosophy: "I have observed during complimentary tastings at our winery that people are pleasantly surprised with our wines. Our winery offers something that appeals to everyone as our fruit wines are diverse in both flavour and sweetness. Our signature blueberry and cranberry wines seem to be especially popular. Working with the different fruits has certainly been a challenge as they have such varied characteristics. Similar to grapes there are significant differences in color, flavour, sugar content and quantity of juice you obtain when pressing different varieties of blueberries.

The blueberry musts are quite easy to prepare as they typically have sufficient nutrient for yeasts and require only sugar and a little acid to be added.  Cranberry juice is very acidic and requires a significant acid reduction and addition of nutrient before yeasts will flourish in the must.  I avoid using essences to achieve fruit flavour, aroma and color in our wines.  I prefer to use lots of fruit as we have more than enough available from our farm.  I always wait with anticipation to see how each batch turns out and then decide the best way to finish it that will best achieve a top quality wine and meet our production needs."

Signature wines: Cranberry Reserve, Blueberry Reserve, Iced Apple

Cannon Estate Winery

30523 Burgess Ave
Abbotsford, British Columbia

Andi and Justin Manuel moved to the Fraser Valley 10 Years ago to start a family. After settling in Mt. Lehman with their two boys and family dog, Daisy, their entrepreneurial spirit led them to explore one of their many passions, wine!

After acquiring 20 acres on a whim with no plan of what to do with the land, Justin and Andi were inevitably left wondering, now what? At the time they bought the property, they were spending their summers in the Okanagan with their two young boys, Tate and Rudy. Loading up the boys into the chariot behind their bikes and trudging up the Kettle Valley Railroad to the Naramata bench was a family favourite activity… or maybe just Andi and Justin’s favourite activity…who knows?! Either way, the time they spent creating these beautiful memories inspired them to plant a vineyard on their property in Mt. Lehman.

They brought in an experienced viticulturist and winemaker, Patrick Blandin, to further study the environment to optimize their property and create the ideal growing conditions.

The estate vineyard 12.5 acres. 16 varietals planted on 23 plots. Muscat, Petite Milo, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir to name a few.

They have two labels Cannon and Wick

When doudt crossed their minds as to weather or not they wwhere doing the right thing Justin delcaeted "“It’s too late…the wick is lit!”" The name Cannon relects this too “Cannon” comes from the moment in time where an idea takes hold and there’s no going back. Andi describes this moment with Justin as being like a Cannon. When the idea sets in place, there’s no going back. “The wick is lit.”

Winemaking Philosophy:
Patrick takes an artful, big-picture approach to wine making. He chose our varietals, rootstocks, studied the terroir, planted and cares for the vineyard, and makes the wine himself.

Chaberton Estates Winery

The first of the Fraser Valley wineries, Domaine de Chaberton was opened (1975)by founder's Claude and Inge Violet. This very successful winery was named after the vineyard they had owned in France. The 55 acre parcel of land produces a selection of vitis vinifera 'cool climate' grapes including their signature wine grape "Bacchus". The first vines planted, these Bacchus plants are now over 30 years old! Joining them are: Siegerrebe, Madeleine Sylvaner, Reichensteiner, Madeleine Angevine, Ortega and Gamay Noir.

Located in the beautiful countryside just north of Abbotsford is the new (spring 2017) Seaside Pearl Winery owned by Allison and David Zimmerman. The name comes from a pearl and gift shop Allison once owned on the White Rock beach.

While exploring potential locations for an Estate Vineyard and home site, we came across Mount Lehman, a peaceful rural community. Built by pioneering families in the Fraser Valley, we were captivated by Mount Lehman’s spectacular views, and incredible charm.

When it came time to name our line of wines, we just kept coming back to Mount Lehman’s historic charm and deep agricultural history.  Our consultations with local historians and long-time residents led us towards names that are rich with the settlement stories of the pioneers and early settlers in Mount Lehman That one of the world’s most beautiful places is concentrated here seems almost unfair.

The property also operates as a horse ranch.

The beautiful designed chapel tasting room welcomes you in style featuring a patio with amazing views.
