Our Okanagan trip 2011

This is the story of our Okanagan Trip July 2011. We had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people. We wish to thank D' Angelo winery and Tinhorn Creek for making this trip possible. A thank you is also extended to Touch of English B&B. On a number of occasions we managedt o find the winemaker and or owners at the winery. At Township7 Mike Raffan (owner ) and Winemaker Brad Cooper were kind enough to give me a photo session. At Nichol Winery owner/winemaker Ross Hackworth dipping with sweat from working in the vineyard took time to chat. The Grape King Sal D' Angelo sat on the deck overlooking his vineyards and Okanagan Lake with us. We spent almost most two hours with the owners of 3 Mile Estate Winery (operating without doors). Barry Turner at Sunnybrae Vineyards took me on a vineyard tour and Nancy Turner took my wife Barbara on a tour of their own.

We were spoiled by the staff at Tinhorn Creek. We tasted wines with Kim Pullen at Church and State. We completed our trip with Stella Schmidt at Castoro de Oro Estate Winery. Special thanks must also go to Ingrid and Helmet at Ingrid's B&B, Steph D'Angelo The Naramata Bench Association and most of all the winery staff who treat us so nicely where ever we went.

Sunnybrea Vineyards and Winery

The first winery on our trip was one of BC's newest wineries in the Shuswap Sunnybrae Vineyards and Winery owned by Barry and Nancy Turner. They run a true family winery receiving help from their daughters and grandchildren.

Mark Wendenburg, the former long-time Sumac Ridge winemaker, consulted on finishing the vintage. Sunnybrae made 1,200 cases in its first vintage, opening its tasting room in May, 2011.

The view from the winery is spectacular as are their wines. Bastion Mountain Red 2010 was Barbara's favourite. This dark-hued wine has aromas and flavours of black cherry, chocolate and coffee. I have always like Ortega and their 2010 does not disappoint. Barry was kind enough to take me on a vineyard tour. Nancy and my wife toured the gardens.
