A small and quaint winery, their wines are created hands-on by the owners, Lanny Kinrade and Deborah Wilde, and with the help of family and friends, in small quantities for quality control. They believe great wine is an expression of the area it comes from….it's grown, not made. A combination of soil, sun, vine and man, their wine begins with its roots deep within the sandy loam of the northern tip of the Great Basin Desert . It is then ripened by the hot Okanagan sun and finally aged in their unique underground cellar which is overlooked by the Hidden Chapel. Legend has it that the wines are blessed by this Hidden Chapel ------ tasting is believing!

When I visited Hidden Chapel, tasting was to believe-----I didn't want to leave. Stopping in at this boutique winery and purchasing their wine will provide great pleasure.

Lanny Kinrade & Deborah Wilde

As Proprietors, Lanny Kinrade & Deborah Wilde, began their story in 2005 when they purchased land that would eventually become the winery. Its attributes included a gorgeous setting overlooking neighbouring vineyards, beautiful gardens and a little chapel nestled amongst the pine trees at the back of the property. The vineyard of cabernet sauvignon grapes was planted in spring 2006.

Moving to the south Okanagan in spring of 1998, they began with an organic vegetable farm called Riverside Vegetables. Since vegetable farming entails bending over day after day, they decided that purchasing land to grow a vineyard would be a little easier on the back. In 2005 moving to the present location, a winery was not in their original vision but as time moved forward it seemed only a natural progression.

Marg and Terri Kinrade

Lanny is also the winemaker and believes that good wine begins in the vineyard. He is personally involved with every aspect of the vineyard from pruning & thinning to harvesting with the help of his brother Terri Kinrade & wife Marg who have helped every year to produce a bumper crop of premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. His love of great wine has driven him to learn the art of fine winemaking with 2009 being his first vintage. Lanny is hands on with every step of the winemaking process at Hidden Chapel Winery.

Over a glass of wine, Lanny & the boys decided that the location of an old swimming pool on the property, which had not been used for 14 years and was located at the side of a hill, would make an ideal place for an underground wine cellar. In the summer of 2007 construction began on the 1000 square foot structure.

Over the next couple of years an old garage on the property was renovated to make the winery building area and over a few more glasses of wine, they came up with the name of Hidden Chapel Winery. In 2009 they obtained their official wine license to produce wine. Since wine has to age, the first wines were not offered for sale until summer of 2010.

Hidden Chapel Wine Cellar
Hidden Chapel Wine Cellar

The wineshop opened in 2011. In a quaint, cozy style it features antique stained glass panels taken from an old building in downtown Vancouver , a unique tasting bar with re-claimed columns & desert colours of terra cotta, sun yellow and espresso brown accents...the fun began!! Truly, this is not the end of their story but the beginning of a dream that has become reality.

Involved in most every aspect of the winery, Deborah's main focus is marketing. Recently retiring from an 18 year career selling real estate throughout the Okanagan, she looks forward to this new challenge and is very excited to see their dream finally become reality.

Marg has been relentless every season, thinning & tucking the vines to ensure they receive maximum sunshine to help ripen to that perfect brix (sugar) level for harvest. Recently retired from teaching in Nelson, besides working in the vineyard & helping restore the gardens, Marg will also be running the wine shop.

From pouring the concrete of the cave to renovating the winery building; from leaf pruning to harvesting the grapes; and from helping crush the grapes to bottling the finished product, Terri is invaluable. So much for retirement! Both Terri & Marg are greatly appreciated around the winery!

Daughters Kisha & Danielle Kinrade are both involved with the winery. Kisha with experience in both exclusive wine stores and wineries is a sommelier and a valued expertise in the tasting and critiquing of the wine. Kisha was involved in the processing of the 2010 vintages. Danielle also has experience in both exclusive wine stores and their wineries, contributing her knowledge and love of fine wines. Danielle will be helping out in the wine shop and at special events. Kisha's boyfriend, James Spain from Australia has been involved with much of the grunt work around the winery last season and has been much appreciated!

Max & Tessa
Max and his cousin, Tessa, are also a big part of the Hidden Chapel Winery family, they can be seen patrolling their territory...only problem is if a predator came along they would want to play ball with him as they are both very friendly and welcoming pets.
