Grüner Veltliner is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The leaves of the grape vine are five-lobed with bunches that are long but compact, and deep green grapes that ripen in mid-late October in the Northern Hemisphere. Grüner Veltliner has a reputation of being a particularly food-friendly wine and is a popular offering on restaurant wine lists especially in Austria and Czech Republic.
Michal and his wife are originally from Slovakia. They took their passion for wine and moved to British Columbia. Canada. Michal found work in the Okanagan and produced wine under various labels. They launched Winemaker’s CUT wines in 2017 (2016 was the first vintage for Syrah). Why the name. Like a director’s cut, an edited version of a film that represents the director’s unique point of view, Winemaker’s Cut is the winemaker’s unique styling of an Okanagan wine. Through traditional winemaking methods the wines develop naturally and express the characteristics indicative of the Okanagan Valley vineyard. Paying homage to the vineyards environmental conditions including soil type and seasonal climate allows the winemaker to capture a moment in time, cut from vineyard vine.
The Grüner Veltliner comes from their Deadman Lake Vineyard located between Oliver and Osoyoos. Situated on the western side of the valley this vineyard lies 100 meters south-west of Deadman Lake and roughly 1200 meters north of the renown Spotted Lake. The terrain is rich in minerals, sulphur and natural elements in heavy concentration, exclusive to the Okanagan valley and evident in CUT wines.
Vineyard temps can reach 40°C, and often remain above 30°C for several days/weeks at a time supporting adequate on-the-vine ripening time. With extended seasonal daylight hours that prolong daily photosynthesis, minimal concern over high winds, and terraces that evenly distribute precipitation, this vineyard is ideal for dry farming techniques.
The soil Predominantly shale and chernozem soil, rich in humus and carbonates, along with traces of magnesium, calcium, sulphur and sodium as is unique to the terrain of our close neighbour and natural wonder, Spotted Lake, result in fructuous soil that naturally retains and evenly distributes moisture.
The wine has notes of honey, almonds and green apple. The wine is rich with hints of spice and finishes with a zing! It has the wow factor.
Sadly this vintage is sold out but keep your eye open of other Winemaker's Cut Wines. The 2017 Syrah is indeed a red icon rated among BC's best!
