Lulu Island Winery Visit

The sun came out, the temperature began to climb, a perfect day to get some yard work done. Well no.. a much better way to spend the day was to visit a winery. We chose one that was an easy drive away; a quick trip down the highway through the tunnel into the City of Richmond, home of Vancouver's International Airport, Richmond is located on an island called Lulu. We were on our way to Lulu Island Winery

The winery produces numerous wines on site from locally grown berries and grapes brought in from the Okanagan. The production includes red and white wines, fruit wines and icewine.

The beautiful facilities opened this year in time for Vancouver's Winter Olympic's. The winery was host to China House during the games. The building is very attractive with a large retail and tasting room. We were warmly greeted by Shelly and Simon, who helped to make our visit memorial. The winery will certainly be on our list of places to take our out of
town guests this summer.

Fruit wines were available for tasting, we tried the Raspberry and Blueberry. I would rate them as good; my wife was impressed with the Raspberry commenting "Wow now that is Raspberry!" Grape wines offered for tasting were Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Merlot Late Harvest. I thought the Gewürztraminer was the best but then I am a white wine fancier. My wife liked the Merlot Late Harvest we purchased a bottle to enjoy at home with friends.

Lulu Island winery is a major icewine producer; exporting wines to China and other countries. The winery has vineyards in the Okanagan where the icewine grapes are grown and can meet the high standards set for producing Canada's icewines.
