Wines of the Okanagan
Northern Okanagan
This
region covers the area from the Lake Country to Salmon Arm, Tappin and the
surrounding area. The sensative microclimates combined with the hard
work of the winemaker are so very important. The vineyards are planted on
slopes that provide the much needed sunlight and frost free days.
Wineries like Larch Hills and Recline Ridge have proven it can be done.
Larch Hills winery which sits on the top of the hill, at 700 meters
is the highest elevated vineyard in British Columbia. The winery won the
Peoples Choice award at the Okanagan Wine Festival for it's Ortega
in back-to-back years. The winery was originally owned by Hans and Hazel
Nevrkla. Hans retired as a winemaker but has returned to the field as a consultant.
The Vernon wineries may not be considered as northern they
are 46 Km north of Kelowna and 60 Km south of Salmon Arm. In time the Vernon
wineries,The Rise, may have their own region. It's a growing community. Vernon
is located at the Northern end of Okanagan Lake
